An Oasis for End-of-Life Care

Pacifica House, part of Hospice of the North Coast, is an inpatient hospice facility that provides compassionate care for individuals facing the final stages of life. Unlike home-based hospice care, Pacifica House offers a peaceful, homelike environment where patients receive 24/7 medical support, pain management, and emotional and spiritual care. The team at Cheer Home Care had the privilege of visiting Pacifica House to learn more about their services and how they align with Cheer’s mission of bringing dignity and joy to seniors.

A Warm Welcome

Cheer Home Care was greeted and hosted by James Brown, a longtime volunteer enthusiastic about Pacifica House’s mission. James guided the team through the facility, offering information about its offerings – touring three private bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, a spacious living room, a fully equipped kitchen where families can prepare meals for their loved ones, a nurses’ station, and a serene outdoor area featuring multiple seating spaces and a waterfall. James’s warmth and knowledge of hospice care were inspiring. His dedication to ensuring patients feel at home, even in their final days, reflects the compassionate spirit of Pacifica House.

A Haven of Peace and Comfort

Walking through Pacifica House, Cheer immediately felt a sense of calm and care. The facility is thoughtfully designed to support patients and their families, creating an atmosphere that promotes comfort, dignity, and emotional well-being. Every detail is carefully planned to ensure a peaceful environment, from the tranquil outdoor spaces to the welcoming common areas.

Pacifica House and Cheer Home Care Shared Values

At Cheer Home Care, we believe that quality care is more than just medical support; it’s about honoring individuals’ wishes and bringing joy in the smallest ways, something our caregivers do so well! This philosophy resonated with James as he shared a touching story about a patient who had lost his appetite at home. When he arrived at Pacifica House, the staff asked him what he’d like to eat. Initially hesitant, he later requested Del Taco. James went out without hesitation to get the meal, and the patient enjoyed every bite! This simple act of kindness highlights the importance of personalized care and the joy it can bring in difficult times.

Future Collaboration for Cheer Home Care and Pacifica House

Cheer’s visit reinforced Pacifica House’s important role in the hospice community and how Cheer Home Care complements its services. While Cheer provides support in home settings, there are times when a client’s needs extend beyond what home care can offer. In situations where pain management becomes too complex, caregivers require respite, or a patient expresses a desire not to pass at home, Pacifica House provides an alternative. By working together, Cheer Home Care and Pacifica House can ensure that individuals receive the right care at the right time and offer families guidance and support through end-of-life decisions.

Understanding of Hospice Care

This visit furthered Cheer’s appreciation for inpatient hospice care. While many families opt for home-based hospice, facilities like Pacifica House offer a service for those who require specialized, round-the-clock care. Hospice houses are not as common as they once were (San Diego County has only a few).

What families should know about Hospice Care:

There are many misconceptions surrounding hospice care, leading families to delay making critical decisions. Here are a few essential facts:

  • Hospice is about quality of life, not just end-of-life. Many patients experience improved comfort and even prolonged life under hospice care.
  • Families can visit anytime, day or night (ensuring loved ones are never alone).
  • Hospice care provides emotional, physical, and spiritual support, ensuring patients pass with dignity and peace.

For those considering hospice for a loved one, starting earlier than expected can often provide greater comfort and support. Read more about why early hospice care can be beneficial.

How Pacifica House Supports Families and Patients

Pacifica House cares for patients and offers the necessary support for their families.
