An Evening of Inspiration and Impact
Cheer Home Care had the privilege of attending the ALS San Diego Awards & Celebration Dinner at the beautiful Bahia Resort Hotel. This annual event recognizes the individuals, partners, and families who are difference-makers in the San Diego ALS community. Our team dressed to the nines for an elegant and moving evening, reaffirming our commitment to supporting those affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
What is ALS?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often called “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Over time, ALS leads to muscle weakness, loss of mobility, and difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing. While the exact cause remains unknown, risk factors include age (most common in people between 55-75), genetics, and environmental exposures. According to Cleveland Clinic, “an estimated 5,000 people in the United States receive an ALS diagnosis each year.”
Symptoms of ALS in Seniors
- Muscle weakness, particularly in the hands, legs, and arms
- Slurred speech and difficulty swallowing
- Muscle cramps and twitching
- Difficulty walking or balancing
- Respiratory issues as the disease progresses
How is ALS Treated?
No treatment can reverse motor neuron damage, but various therapies and interventions can help slow symptom progression and improve quality of life. Individuals with ALS often require a multidisciplinary approach to care, which may include:
- Medications to help manage symptoms and discomfort
- Therapies and rehabilitation to support mobility and function
- Nutritional support to ensure proper intake as swallowing becomes difficult
- Breathing assistance for respiratory challenges that arise as the disease progresses
Caregivers play a crucial role in managing these treatments and ensuring that seniors with ALS receive the support they need to live as comfortably and independently as possible.
What is ALS San Diego?
ALS San Diego is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals diagnosed with ALS. Their mission, “We Care, We Listen, We Take Action,” is evident in their wide range of free care services, including home visits, case management, medical equipment loans, and resources for children and families navigating ALS.

- 504 home visits to support patients and caregivers
- 1,542 pieces of medical equipment loaned
- Partnerships with over 45 community organizations
- Awareness was raised over 952,000 times through personal stories, advocacy, and events
Their work highlights the collective effort required to support those with ALS, making the annual celebration a testament to community strength and generosity!
Recognizing Changemakers in the ALS Community
Ann Gilotti, ALS San Diego Board Chair, and Brandy Wiegand, Executive Director, hosted the event. They spoke about the organization’s achievements over the past year, mentioning the impact of community partnerships, advocacy efforts, and the growing support network for individuals living with ALS. A “Year in Review” video showcased the difference made by volunteers, caregivers, and donors.
The evening also celebrated outstanding individuals and organizations who have made a lasting impact on the ALS community. Awards were given for Walk Champions, Community Partners of the Year, Commitment to Service, Volunteer of the Year, and Advocate of the Year, honoring those who have gone the extra mile to support ALS families.

A Memorable Evening with a Sweet Finale
The awards and speeches were just one part of the evening. It was also about connections – meeting new people, sharing stories, and finding ways to grow the community of support for ALS families. And, of course, our team couldn’t stop raving about the raspberry and mascarpone mousse for dessert!
